Walls above four feet typically require geogrid reinforcement embedded in the compacted backfill at specific vertical intervals to distribute load through the soil rather than concentrating it at the wall face.

Natural stone retaining walls use limestone, sandstone, or imported fieldstone laid in a dry-stack or mortar-set pattern. Dry-stack walls rely on weight and friction between stones for stability. They are visually natural and allow water to pass through the wall face, reducing hydrostatic pressure without requiring a separate drainage system behind the wall. Mortar-set flagstone is laid over a concrete base with mortar joints between stones. This produces a more rigid, formal surface suited for high-traffic areas, pool surrounds, and projects where precise leveling is required.

Flagstone steps are one of the most effective ways to manage grade transitions in a landscape. Cut limestone or irregular flagstone pieces set into a slope create natural-looking steps that integrate with surrounding planting beds rather than appearing as an imposed structure. Steps set with risers of 6 to 7 inches and treads of 12 to 16 inches are proportioned for comfortable use and comply with standard residential stair guidelines.
